페이스북 주도하던 가상화폐 ‘리브라’→‘디엠’으로 개명

페이스북 주도로 추진되던 가상화폐 '리브라'(Libra)의 이름이 '디엠'(Diem)으로 변경됐다.

블룸버그통신과 로이터통신은 1일(현지시간) 리브라 프로젝트를 추진해온 협회가 가상화폐의 이름을 이처럼 바꾸고 협회 이름도 종전 '리브라 협회'에서 '디엠 협회'로 개명했다고 보도했다.

미국 재무부 차관 출신인 스튜어트 레비 디엠 협회 최고경영자(CEO)는 "원래 이름은 규제당국으로부터 비협조적인 반응을 받았다"며 "기존 리브라 코인의 간단하면서도 개선된 구조를 강조하기 위해 리브랜딩을 결정했다"고 설명했다.

지난 5월에는 디지털 지갑 서비스인 '칼리브라'를 '노비'(Novi)로 이름을 바꿨다. 리브가가 디엠으로 변경됨에 따라 리브라 협회도 디엠 협회로 이름을 변경한다.

리브라는 페이스북이 지난해 6월 달러화나 유로화 등 다양한 통화로 구성된 가상자산을 발행하는 프로젝트다. 각국 정부와 금융당국의 규제로 인해 최근 단일통화 기반 스테이블코인으로 전략을 변경했다. 그러나 주요국 정부나 중앙은행의 반대에 직면했다. 이로 인해 비자, 마스터카드, 페이팔 등 주요 업체가 프로젝트에서 빠지고 현재 협회 참여 회원은 페이스북 등 27곳에 머물러 있다.

#Abstract
The Diem Blockchain is a decentralized, programmable database designed to support a low-volatility cryptocurrency that will have the ability to serve as an efficient medium of exchange for billions of people around the world. We present a proposal for the Diem protocol, which implements the Diem Blockchain and aims to create a financial infrastructure that can foster innovation, lower barriers to entry, and improve access to financial services. To validate the design of the Diem protocol, we have built an open-source prototype implementation — Diem Core — in anticipation of a global collaborative effort to advance this new ecosystem.

The Diem protocol allows a set of replicas — referred to as validators — from different authorities to jointly maintain a database of programmable resources. These resources are owned by different user accounts authenticated by public key cryptography and adhere to custom rules specified by the developers of these resources. Validators process transactions and interact with each other to reach consensus on the state of the database. Transactions are based on predefined and, in future versions, user-defined smart contracts in a new programming language called Move.

We use Move to define the core mechanisms of the blockchain, such as the currency and validator membership. These core mechanisms enable the creation of a unique governance mechanism that builds on the stability and reputation of existing institutions in the early days but transitions to a fully open system over time.
